Projection: need to automatically qualify

Albany’s résumé is anchored by clean wins over league opponents at home and a useful road victory at Stony Brook but its nonconference slate features a string of heavy losses at opponents such as Marquette, UMass, Rhode Island and South Carolina and neutral-site setbacks to Colgate, Fordham and Yale that leave it without a signature quality win; those lopsided outings and an ugly road loss at Columbia outweigh the league wins in the eyes of a selection committee that rewards road and neutral success against top opponents, and while Albany still has several winnable conference dates at home and on the road the remaining trips to Vermont and UMBC are the kind of tests that will determine whether it can vault into the field without the safe route of winning the America East tournament.
