Projection: need to automatically qualify
Albany’s resume screams that the only realistic route to the NCAA Tournament is winning the America East tournament because its nonconference slate produced no signature road wins and a string of bad results away from home, most notably heavy defeats at Marquette and South Carolina and damaging neutral-site losses to Colgate and Fordham. The program’s bright spots are real — a road victory at Stony Brook, a home win over Vermont, and road success against conference peers such as Bryant and NJIT show the team can close out league opponents — but those quality conference wins are overwhelmed by repeated setbacks to Massachusetts Lowell, an ugly loss at Columbia, and a collection of nonconference losses that erode any at-large argument. With no marquee nonconference résumé builder and most of its better results confined to America East sites, Albany’s season will be judged on conference tournament performance where a string of wins against familiar opponents remains the only path to the big dance.
